And… Daddy is a DJ! LOVE when parents want to include items of their profession for sessions!

My beautiful assistant, Andrea, and her husband Ryan, Had her precious baby girl on New Year’s Eve! Her name is Remington (Remi for short) and I just adore her! She will be a nice little helper one day to the BBP family! Thank you, Andie, for letting me steal your baby away for 3 sessions!

So, One day I went shopping online for new newborn props. (I already have more than I need and I’m sure my husband loves me for it)  I wanted the fluffy flokati but shortly realized it was wayyy out of my price range that I want to spend! So I found some nice shag fur available in multiple colors. Went to add them to my cart and they were all sold out but pink. I really wanted the teal color and a yellow.

Then when I got the fur I was upset because I loved it more, but it was pink. I can’t lay a boy on pink!!

Or, can I?

So then I decided to play around with the saturation of the photo (from a sweet baby girl session) using a duplicate layer and whalaa!  You can do this to about anything but I noticed it works really well on the fluffy furs such as a normal shag fur or the flokati and the stretch wraps!  Remember when you are actually shooting this that the colors will change in post processing! If I would’ve used a different color wrap it would change the over all colors when I played with the saturation. But you play with it and see what you think!

Step 1.

Open your file

Step2.

Right click on the background and create a duplicate layer.

Step 3.

Make sure you are on the duplicate layer on the layers board and then select the adjustment- hue/saturation.

Step 4.

Move the cursers around until you find a color you want.  You can play with the saturation and the hue. If you make it too bright you can always lower the layer opacity later.

Step 5.

Make a layer mask! To do this just click the little icon that looks like a square with a circle inside!

Step 6.

Select the paint brush in black (because the layer mask is white) and start painting the skin of the baby. Don’t be too picky around the edges, I’ll show you have to clean it up!

Step 7.

Once you’ve finished painting the baby with black and you need to clean up the edges- while still using the paint brush tool press the ‘X’ letter on the keybord. This changes your color from black to the white! Now you can easily change the size of your brush and paint BACK the teal color that was erased. Super easy to fix mistakes!

Step 8.

Flatten and save! But do not close if you want more colors!

Step 9.

Once you’ve done the above instructions now it is easy peasy to just change the colors!! Just go up to the history board and click the step before flatten.

Step 10.

Now you can go up to the Image– adjustments– hue/saturation again and choose another color.

Step 11.

Flatten, save, repeat!

So when you are laying a precious baby boy on your pink rug and the Dad thinks you are nuts just think of me.

aaannnnd now I can buy a colorful flokati rug and just change the colors! And you can too!  Your bank account can thank me later.

You can also change plain colors by clicking the ‘colorize’ box in the lower right corner- it may help!
